San Antonio Spurs release 2022 NBA Summer League roster

The San Antonio Spurs have officially released their 2022 Summer League roster. Amidst the loom and gloom of the pouring rain on Tuesday afternoon, June 28, the Spurs brought out the lone bright spot as we look toward a busy free agency season. Headlined by second-year guard Josh Primo, the 17-man roster will give fans the first glimpse at this year’s three first round draft picks Jeremy Sochan, Malaki Branham, and Blake Wesley in silver & black.

Sochan will probably miss the first couple of games after entering the league’s health and safety protocols due to a positive COVID-19 test Wednesday morning, June 29. Regardless, Primo brings the most name recognition and will likely lead the squad early on. The roster will also give a look at 2021 second-round draft pick Joe Wieskamp.

The organization that prides itself on developing its own will hope to do just that with the additions this summer of two-way contract players DJ Stewart Jr. and Robert Woodard II, as well as a slew of undrafted rookies which include Dominick Barlow, Josh Carlton, Darius Days, Kyler Edwards, Jordan Hall, Anthony Polite, Denzel Mahoney, and Sasha Stefanovic. Barlow also signed a two-way contract following the draft.

Spurs assistant coach Mitch Johnson will lead the unit from the sidelines and serve as summer league head coach for the second straight summer.

This year’s draft marked the first time in franchise history that San Antonio drafted three players in the first round of the NBA Draft and Spurs faithful didn’t have to wait long to see what numbers the incoming rookies would be wearing with the silver and black.

Sochan, the No. 9 overall pick, chose the number 10 for his inaugural season. Five-time NBA All-Star DeMar DeRozan was the latest Spur to rock the number, but the top 10 lottery pick will most likely resemble shades – both in hair color and style of play on defense –  to that of another prominent Spur, Dennis Rodman.
