Saginaw’s Cinco de Mayo parade will disrupt traffic. Here’s what to know Saturday.

SAGINAW, MI — Onlookers will crowd downtown Saginaw for the annual Cinco de Mayo parade Saturday, May 6.

Part of that tradition for Saginaw residents involves evading the road blockades that route vehicle traffic around the morning festivities.

Here’s what to know:

The 2-mile parade will launch at 10 a.m. from Hoyt Park near downtown Saginaw, then continue north on South Washington Avenue before concluding with a turn east at Johnson Street, where many of the participants will file into Jolt Credit Union Event Park across from The Dow Event Center. At the park, the festivities — which will include music and food — will continue the day’s celebrations until 6 p.m.

The parade will impact motorists traversing the downtown district beginning about 9:45 a.m., when city crews plan to install detour signs re-routing traffic along South Washington and some adjoining roadways, said Joe Nugent, a traffic administrator with Saginaw City Hall.

“If all goes well, the detours will all be picked up by noon,” he said.

The detours will route motorists around South Washington at the intersections between Ezra Rust Drive and Johnson Street, he said. Both the Genesee Avenue and Holland Street bridges also will remain closed to traffic.

Court Street Bridge will remain open as an emergency route, Nugent said. At the Ezra Rust intersection at the bridge, road crews will permit motorists to travel south on South Washington but not north.

City officials said they advise parade spectators to arrive by 9:45 a.m.

Cinco de Mayo organizers said the parade lineup will begin inside Hoyt Park at 8 a.m.

As of earlier this week, more than 50 organizations registered to participate in the parade, although more were anticipated to join by Saturday, organizers said. Last year, about 100 entrants participated in the parade.
