Ryan Day updates the status of Devin Brown, Ohio State’s quarterback room following Cotton Bowl loss

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Cotton Bowl was supposed to be Devin Brown’s first real chance to showcase what he could do in his first start as Ohio State’s starting quarterback, but that didn’t last long.

Brown left the game in the first quarterback after taking a sack and needing to be replaced by Lincoln Kienholz who finished the rest of the game.

“He had a high ankle sprain and wasn’t able to return,” head coach Ryan Day revealed after the 14-3 loss to Missouri.

Brown’s departure limited him to just four of six passing for 20 yards. The injured ankle was the same one that plagued him for most of the back half of the season first injuring it against Penn State while being used in a red zone package debut a week prior. Since that injury — which he reinjured during warmups when he returned a few weeks later — his services has been limited to only being called upon in emergency situations while garbage time snaps went to Kienholz.

Once Kyle McCord elected to enter the transfer portal, it provided a chance for Brown to get 30 day of preparation for his first start. More importantly, this would be a chance to get a proper evaluation on the older player in the room as the Buckeyes head into another offseason where there would be a quarterback battle.

Brown may not have been able to officially win the job on Friday night, but he could’ve at the very least started building his foundation to do so. Instead, OSU heads into the offseason with more questions than it anticipated having about the current state of its quarterback room.

“I don’t have a great answer on that right now because this is not what we were expecting coming out of the game,” Day said. “We didn’t have a game to look at and go through and evauale. We know what we see in practice but it’s certainly different when you play in a game. Disappointed we don’t we don’t have that.”

For now, Brown and Kienholz will be joined by five-star Air Noland in January as the three battle to be Ohio State’s next starting quarterback. Anything factors outside of that, are still unknown for the time being.

“We’ll go back to work and figure that part of it out,” Day said. “But again, I don’t have a great answer on that right now because we didn’t have a game from Devin.”
