Rwanda flights grounded while Tories target human rights laws

Priti Patel’s Rwanda policy faces being delayed for months as ministers accept it would be “a gamble” to book another flight before the courts have given their ruling.

Separately, ministers are planning an overhaul of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) that will allow migrants due for removal only the “narrowest possible exemption” under Article 8 of the treaty, which protects an individual’s right to a family and private life.

A government source said an exemption being considered would be so narrow that it would allow migrants to remain only if a close relative was dying.
