Rutter’s said it will add stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia and for the first time enter Delaware and Virginia. It’s also investing $150 million in capital expenditures this year to remodel stores and add alcohol sales and video gaming terminals at some locations.

Rutter’s said in its home state it is expanding outside the core central Pa. market, with plans to operate stores from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia and north of Altoona. The stores will feature large walk-in beer caves, expansive wine offerings, dine-in seating and Rutter’s 24-hour a day food/beverage offerings.

The stores will range in size from 10,000 to 12,000 square-feet and some will be built on properties as large as 25 acres.

“Thanks to our food service innovation, focus on industry leading wages, large breath of offerings, and best-in-class customer experience, we find that our locations are the customer favorite in new and existing markets,” said Scott Hartman, Rutter’s President and CEO, in a statement.

The private-owned company’s stores are known for fueling stations and Rutter’s operates video gaming terminals in 21 Pennsylvania stores.

Rutter’s has 84 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia and has won numerous awards including U.S. Convenience Store Chain of the Year and International Convenience Retailer of the Year. Rutter’s convenience stores grew out of Rutter’s family farm, which dates to 1747.
