Rutherford native and Golden Globe winner Ramy Youssef to launch animated series on Prime

Bergen County native Ramy Youssef, co-creator of the acclaimed Hulu series “Ramy,” is preparing to launch his next big project — an animated comedy series set to run next year on Amazon Prime Video.

Youssef, of Rutherford, received a two-season order for the series titled “#1 Happy Family USA” in 2022. On Tuesday, Variety revealed a voice line-up for the show that includes Alia Shawkat (“Search Party,” ‘Arrested Development’), Chris Redd (“Saturday Night Live”), and Mandy Moore (“This Is Us”).

The show focuses on “the experiences of a Muslim-American family that must learn how to code-switch as they navigate the early 2000s: a time of fear, war, and the rapid expansion of the boy-band industrial complex,” Variety reported.

In 2020, Youssef won a Golden Globe for best actor in “Ramy” for his portrayal of a first-generation American Muslim pulled between tradition and his life as a young millennial. Youssef, an Egyptian American, plays himself in the show, which has been described as semi-autobiographical.

“We made a very specific show about an Arab Muslim family living in New Jersey, and this means a lot to be recognized on this level,” Youssef said as he accepted the award.

Youssef is also co-creator of “Mo” on Netflix, an American comedy-drama about a Palestinian refugee and asylum seeker trying to make a life in Texas. Like “Ramy,” it has also received wide critical acclaim.
