The character famously tells his children to f*** off regularly on the HBO show.

And Brian revealed that he was shocked to be approached by fans and asked to say the catchphrase on camera.

He said: “It started one night, I was doing a play on broadway at Lincoln centre.

“I came out and there was this young girl of about 17 with her boyfriend.

“She said, ‘We love that show’, I said, ‘Oh thank you’.

“She said, ‘Could we take a video of you?’ And I said, ‘Well sure’.

“She said, ‘Would you please tell us to ….”

Brian hesitated and asked Ryan: “Can I say it?”

Ryan responded: “Yes you can.”

Brian finished the story shouting: “F*** off.”

He left Ryan and the audience in stitches.

Brian added: “And I went, ‘What the f***?’ Ah F*** off.

“50 years of a major classical career playing everything under the sun and finally… ‘Oh he was known for his famous f*** off’.”

‘LEGEND’

Viewers at home praised the actor for his honest storytelling but worried there would be backlash for swearing on RTE.

Aoife wrote: “Brian Cox has just used up all of the Late Late Shows f-word quota for the year. #LateLateShow #Latelate.”

Stephen added: “I’d say @joeliveline answering machine will be full when they’ll arrive back on Monday with complaints about #latelateshow.”

Elaine said: “I could listen to Brian Cox all night. Legend #LateLateShow.”

Maire Tweeted: “LateLateShow only Brian Cox could say F O and we burst laughing.”

‘FIELD DAY’

Emma commented: “Joe Duffy callers will have a field day Monday morning #BrianCox.”

Brian confirmed that filming for season four of Succession is currently underway.

When asked if there were more to come, he replied: “Well who knows? We sign NDA agreements up to the wazoo.”

Brian also spoke with Ryan about his connection to Ireland and why he dreams of an independent Scotland.

The actor told a hilarious story about a run-in he had with Princess Margaret.
