Roy Keane’s moustache was the talk of social media after the Manchester United legend sported a new look on ITV during televised coverage of his former club’s FA Cup clash with Everton.

The Red Devils may have emerged victorious against the Toffees, winning 3-1, but their former midfielder’s lip foliage proved a loser with some viewers who were quick to poke fun at the 51-year-old Irish pundit. From the safety of their keyboards, of course.

Keane, who normally hits the headlines with his outspoken views, was centre of attention once more as his ’tache conjured up images of old sports presenters Des Lynam and Dickie Davies, as well as the imprisoned Tiger King, Joe Exotic. Some Twitter users also asked whether he was displaying his handlebar bristle baton as a form of disguise.

Séamas Uinseann Mac Aodagáin tweeted: “Roy Keane is a 70s South American detective in a crooked police force trying to take down the king pin of a local drug cartel. The king pin… is Robbie Keane.”

Richard Dixon thought he resembled the great Lynam, writing: “Been killing myself trying to work out where I’ve seen Roy Keane’s moustache before and I think I’ve nailed it. 80s Des.”

Rhodri Morgan was actually a fan of Keane’s new look, harking as he also harked back to the 80s. He added: “Love Roy Keane but the only thing he’s missing with that tache is spit the dog.”

@UFD_OX said: “Roy Keane channeling his inner Begbie from Trainspotting tonight.”

One of the most popular tweets was from The Guy With The Hoodie, who wrote: “Roy Keane looks like he wants pictures of Spider-Man on his desk by noon.”

Shaun Lyon plucked out another popular 80s reference, writing: “Roy Keane at ht and seems he is going for the full peak Tom Selleck Magnum P.I look. Maybe this is where we’ve been going wrong – let’s get some 80’s taches, mullets, permed highlights back and who knows…”
