Ross Barkley’s performance for Luton Town against Manchester City has got fans talking.
Having once been considered one of England’s brightest prospects, Barkley’s career was derailed after difficult spells at both Chelsea and Nice.
However, the 30-year-old has found a new lease of life at Luton and is playing a major role in the Hatters’ unlikely survival bid.
Barkley played a significant part in Luton’s opener against reigning Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup holders Manchester City, while he was among the best players on the pitch as Rob Edwards’ side narrowly lost 3-2 to Arsenal in midweek.
Barkley’s last England appearance came in a 6-0 win over Bulgaria in 2019, with the former Everton star having netted twice and claimed an assist in that game. However, he has been way down Southgate’s midfield pecking order in recent years.
However, fans on X, the social media platform formally known as Twitter, are suggesting that Barkley would be an ideal No.8 to play alongside Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham.
One person said: “Hear me out…… This version of Ross Barkley with Rice and Bellingham in a midfield for England.”
Another wrote: “Ross Barkley has really been class in the more holding role the last few weeks. If he keeps this up, deserves to be in contention for England over Kalvin Phillips surely.”
A third person added: “If Ross Barkley keeps playing the way he is, could he be the answer to an England problem position at the Euros? Rice, Barkley and Bellingham could work very well.”
A fourth person said: “Ross Barkley redemption arc. He’s taking England to Euro 2024 glory.”
A fifth continued: “Call me crazy, but Ross Barkley needs to play for England again.”
