TAYKWA TAGAMOU TRADITIONAL TERRITORY, Ont. — Ontario Regional Chief RoseAnne Archibald is stepping away from the post.
After one term in office, Archibald announced Tuesday that she will not seek re-election at next month’s All-Ontario Chiefs Conference, when her term expires.
She didn’t indicate if she intends to stay in politics, but said she’ll announce her future plans in the coming days.
In a statement, Archibald said she came into the office three years ago facing a deficit, and with a mandate to restructure the organization with the leadership council and chiefs.
After one year, there was a financial surplus.
The statement said she created a consensus-based agenda and implemented an economic growth and prosperity table, council of elected women chiefs, and a strong Ontario response to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls national action plan.
Archibald also cited her inclusive leadership style and a collaborative relationship with both the Ontario and federal governments as being important in keeping COVID-19 case numbers low.
“I am leaving the organization in a better place than when I found it,” she said, citing a full staff, new departments, a balanced budget and other accomplishments that were made “through the shared vision and actions of Chiefs and Grand Chiefs across the region.”
