Kevin Campbell has claimed “it will be a big boost” for Man City when Aymeric Laporte returns to full fitness.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Arsenal striker heaped praise on the 28-year-old and highlighted his “ability and leadership qualities.”

Laporte has not been available for Pep Guardiola’s side this season because of injury.

The centre-half had surgery in the summer on a knee problem that plagued him for the last few games of the 2021-22 campaign.

As pictured by club media (19 August), Laporte has been training with his previous side Athletic Club as he steps up his recovery.

When asked by Football Insider if the defender’s return was timely given Nathan Ake’s injury at Newcastle United, Campbell said: “It will be a big boost.

“Laporte is a top-class player and he has proven that over a number of seasons now.

“I was surprised that Ake started the season but he has done well. [John] Stones has been in and out of the side. They have a lot of cover in that area.

“But to have Laporte come back, not just his ability but his leadership qualities, it will be a big boost.

“Regardless of who is fit, Laporte will come back into that side if he is fit.”

Laporte has been regular for City since joining from Athletic Club in January 2018.

The Spain international has four Premier League titles to his name.

In other news, an ex-Fifa official has issued a verdict on Man City controversy as Jamie Carragher fumes.
