Richmond weight-loss support group celebrates 50th anniversary

The Richmond chapter of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) was formed in 1972.
A Richmond support group focusing on losing weight the right way is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
Members past and present of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) will be meeting on July 22 at South Arm United Church to celebrate this momentous occasion over awards and light snacks.
Chapter #1588 was formed in Richmond back in 1972, and according to chapter leader Trish Campbell, the group has remained consistent in its premise while keeping up with the science of nutrition and weight management.
“When I look at the history of [TOPS Richmond], it hasn’t changed a lot, and I think that’s what keeps people coming to it,” she said.
The support group meets every Friday at South Arm United Church, where they do weigh-ins and learn about a variety of topics including self-care and the Canadian Food Guide.
“It’s a very friendly, supportive, and non-judgmental environment. We don’t dictate any particular diet. We talk about a variety and what works best for the individual, and what we can do to support them,” said Campbell.
A member of the Richmond chapter, Ralph Steeves, was previously named the TOPS 2019 British Columbia King in recognition of his success in reaching his weight-loss goal.
Lydia Pattison, TOPS advocate, said that 50 years is an important milestone for the chapter.
“That means that there’s been people there supporting each other,” she said.
Each chapter runs things a little differently, as TOPS is dedicated to supporting each member with their own meal plans and providing them with the tools, information, and support. And the Richmond chapter is a special one.
“It’s a fantastic chapter. It’s one of my favourite ones to visit. They’re all very friendly, very supportive of each other,” said Pattison.
To members such as Campbell and Pattison, TOPS is much more than a weight-loss group.
“… [TOPS is] not just a weekly ‘Come in and weigh in.’ They’re there to support each other throughout the week regardless if it’s weight loss,” said Pattison.
And having a community and a routine is crucial to losing weight in a healthy and sustainable way.
“I know that people had a hard time with the pandemic. Some people were saying they put on the ‘Covid 15’ or ‘Covid 20,’ and it’s really hard to diet on your own. But when you have support, it makes it much more effective,” said Campbell.
As the Richmond chapter looks to the future, Campbell hopes that the tight-knit Richmond TOPS community can continue to support each other in person.
“I hope that we can be an ongoing presence,” she said.
