Richarlison has cost Tottenham more per goal than what Arsenal paid for brilliant signing

Tottenham’s £60million swoop for Richarlison in the summer looked to be a decent move following excellent spells at Everton and Watford. However, the 25-year-old forward hasn’t hit the ground running and has only found the back of the net twice this season.

Both goals came against Marseille in a Champions League group stage tie back in September and the Brazilian hasn’t scored since meaning the north London side have forked out £30m per goal. In comparison, rivals Arsenal paid just £27m for Leandro Trossard in January, who has proved to be an absolute bargain.

Despite only making seven starts this season, the Belgian has seven assists and one goal to his name already. His presence has been crucial throughout the latter stages of the Gunners’ campaign and statistics show that Arsenal’s expected goals per game increase by 0.32 from 1.94 to 2.26 when he’s on the pitch.

Many have hailed him as the best signing of the January transfer window while Richarlison has been seen as a massive flop. But ex-Tottenham midfielder Gus Poyet claims Richarlison’s poor run of form is down to former manager Antonio Conte.

He told Bettingsites.co.uk: “I think the progress Richarlison made under Conte, right up until the World Cup, was nearly perfect. The way that Conte took him to be a possible replacement for Harry Kane when he was not fit or getting in every now and then in the wide positions, it was perfect.

“He was getting used to that role, the problem was after the World Cup. He’s not playing in the same way or in the same position for Spurs as he was before. Maybe, he thought when he came back he would have more minutes, but I think something has changed. But let’s hope he can get back to his best because Spurs need him.”

However, since Conte’s departure and the appointment of Christian Stellini as an interim, Richarlison hasn’t had a look into the side. He was an unused substitute during Spurs’ controversial 2-1 win against Brighton last week and didn’t even make the matchday squad for the 1-1 draw with Everton the week prior.
