Resident escapes from overnight house fire in Durham, officials say

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — One person was displaced after they escaped a house fire in Durham early Tuesday.

According to the Durham Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire in the 5800 block of Shamrock Road around 12:20 a.m.

The first unit to arrive saw heavy fire coming from the roof of a single-family home. A total of 36 personnel responded to the blaze, and it took them 25 minutes to control the flames, the fire department said.

One person was inside the home at the time and was able to escape uninjured. Due to the house sustaining heavy smoke, fire and water damage, the resident was displaced and is being helped by friends as well as the American Red Cross.

An investigation showed the fire began in a bedroom, the Durham Fire Department said, and the cause was determined to be accidental.

No one was injured while battling the fire, officials said. The Durham Fire Department was assisted by Durham County EMS.
