Rescue crews find missing boy, 12, after air and ground search in Brewster

Brewster #Brewster

BREWSTER ‒ Multiple law enforcement agencies and fire departments made a successful search for a 12-year-old boy who went missing Sunday evening near Fairless High School.

Brewster police asked the village fire department to help look for the boy around the 800 block of Seventh Street SE at 5:51 p.m.

Safety forces were concerned about his well-being due to the appoaching darkness, and because the area is densely wooded and swampy, and according to Assistant Fire Chief Scott Borojevich.

Police Chief Nathan Taylor agreed that the nature of the terrain was a concern.

“If you go to the wrong area, it could get you in big trouble,” he said.

Taylor said the police department’s standard procedure is to conduct a full search when a parent reports a child missing.

Borojevich said the boy was found just before 9 p.m.

Emergency crews used the new high school parking lot as a command and staging area.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded with two troopers on the ground and an aircraft with thermal imaging. The Marathon Oil fire department deployed a thermal imaging drone. Navarre police brought another drone. Brewster fire personnel responded with multiple off-road vehicles: two brush trucks, two fire department utility vehicles, a rescue truck, two ambulances and multiple personal utility vehicles. The Wilmot Fire Department sent two ambulances. Erie Valley Fire & Rescue sent a rescue unit. Marlboro Fire Department members brought two tracking dogs. The Hartville Police Department sent a police dog and officer. The Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway brought equipment and other resources. Beach City police and fire departments also assisted.

The fire department used social media to spread awareness about the incident.

“A good representation of a community and their services, working with other communities and organizations to provide a positive outcome,” Borojevich said in a prepared statement. “A great job by all.”
