A pair of lawmakers got into a shouting match over gun control outside the House chamber on Wednesday after a school shooting in Nashville left six people dead earlier this week.
Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) passionately addressed reporters in a hallway outside the House chamber, criticizing Republicans as being “gutless” and “cowards” for refusing to implement stricter gun regulations. The New York Democrat was then interrupted by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), who asked, “What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about gun violence,” replied Bowman, a former middle school principal and crisis management teacher.
The interaction then became a heated exchange as the two butted heads on the issue — beginning with Massie telling Bowman that “there’s never been a school shooting in a school that allows teachers to carry.”
“Carry guns? More guns lead to more death,” Bowman shouted. “Look at the data; you’re not looking at any data.”
The two continued to engage in the back-and-forth, which only escalated when Massie suggested Bowman should “calm down.”
“Calm down?” Bowman yelled. “Children are dying!”
The verbal altercation comes as lawmakers remain split on how to address the rise in school shootings, a national conversation that has received renewed attention this week after a shooter opened fire at the Covenant School on Monday, killing three children and three staff members.

Democrats have used the most recent incident to push for legislation that would target the underlying causes of gun violence, while Republicans have remained hesitant to enact laws that implement firearm restrictions. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has urged Congress to pass tighter gun regulations, including an assault weapons ban.
“I have done the full extent of my executive authority, on my own,” Biden said earlier this week. “I can’t do anything except plead with Congress to act.”
