Former Trinity Christian infielder Austin Martin, the No. 5 overall pick from the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2020 Major League Baseball Draft, was traded Friday to the Minnesota Twins.

The Blue Jays dealt Martin, ranked by MLB.com as their No. 2 prospect overall, and pitcher Simeon Woods-Richardson to the Minnesota organization in exchange for pitcher Jose Berrios.

The news was first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Martin, 22, has played 55 games this season at Double-A New Hampshire, batting .281 with two home runs, 16 RBIs, nine stolen bases and an .807 OPS. He won an NCAA championship at Vanderbilt. When Toronto selected him fifth last year, he became the area’s earliest-drafted baseball player since Chipper Jones from Bolles in 1990.

Martin competed earlier this month at the Major League Baseball Futures Game in Colorado.

In exchange for Martin, the Blue Jays received a starting pitcher in Berrios, who is 7-5 with a 3.48 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 126 strikeouts thus far. The 27-year-old from Puerto Rico was an All-Star in 2018 and 2019.
