Fresh off of a Stanley Cup final run for the first time in his NHL career, Shea Weber’s career could be taking a sad turn.

Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reported Wednesday night that the Canadiens are not expected to protect captain Shea Weber for next week’s Seattle Kraken expansion draft.

Per Lavoie, Weber has issues with his thumb, foot, ankle and knee that is expected to keep him out of play for the entirety of the 2021-22 season.

Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin must submit his list of protected players for the expansion draft by Saturday but is not expected to hold on to Weber, 35. Weber has four years left on his massive 14-year contract.

Prior to the playoffs, where he averaged 25:13 in ice time a game, Weber missed the final eight games of the regular season with ligament damage in his left thumb. Weber had six points in the playoffs, but many wondered just healthy he was during the post-season. The latest news should offer a glimpse into what went wrong for the team captain.
