The Detroit Pistons have moved their biggest trade chip on the eve of the NBA draft.

The Pistons today traded forward Jerami Grant to the Portland Trail Blazers for a first-round pick in 2025, which belongs to the Milwaukee Bucks, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

He reported the Bucks’ 2025 pick is protected from 1 through 4.

The move creates a $21 million trade exception for the Pistons, leaving them with $43 million in cap space for free agency, per Wojnarowski. Grant, 28, was entering the final year of a three-year, $60 million contract he signed with Detroit in November 2020 following a sign and trade with the Denver Nuggets.

ESPN reported Detroit also swapped second-round picks this year with the Blazers, getting No. 36 for No. 46, and the Pistons will get back the 2025 second-round pick they owed Portland. In addition, the Blazers will send the most favorable 2026 second-rounder to the Pistons between Portland, New Orleans and Detroit.

Leading up to the draft there was speculation that the Pistons might be able to acquire this year’s No. 7 pick from Portland for Grant. Chances are, the pick they received in 2025 will be much lower since the Bucks, who won the NBA Championship last year, figure to be contenders for several years.

Grant’s scoring average dipped last season to 19.2 (from 22.3), when he missed 25 games due to injuries. Demand still was high for the scoring forward leading up to last season’s trade deadline. He was linked to Portland more than any other team. The Blazers need someone to pair with star guard Damian Lillard after dealing C.J. McCollum to New Orleans at the deadline.

Pistons general manager Troy Weaver wasn’t satisfied with the offers, however.

The 6-8 Grant averaged 20.9 points in 101 games for Detroit over two seasons. He will be eligible to sign a four-year, $112 million contract extension beginning in December.
