After months of rumors and vague comments, a new report seems to confirm that Hailee Steinfeld will join the cast of Disney+’s Hawkeye series.

According to The Illuminerdi, Steinfeld will portray Kate Bishop, the protégé of Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton. The series will focus on Barton training Bishop to become the next Hawkeye as she takes on the superhero mantle.

Steinfeld has been rumored for the role since September of last year. In November, while speaking about the part, Steinfeld said, “[t]hat’s not something that’s necessarily happening. We’re going to wait and find out, I guess.” It was then reported just 10 days ago that Steinfeld was no longer in the running for the role.

Steinfeld’s back-and-forth casting rumor is just one of the many tumultuous aspects of Hawkeye’s production. Back in January, the series was reportedly delayed indefinitely, something that Disney quickly denied. (But not before Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Adrianne Palicki offered to replace the Hawkeye series with one centered on her character Mockingbird.) Of course, there are also the challenges presented by COVID-19, which has delayed or hampered nearly all of Marvel’s projects.

Announced at Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego last year, Hawkeye is one of several Marvel TV shows planned for Disney+. The other series currently in production include The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Moon Knight and the animated What If…? The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was scheduled to premiere in August but was delayed due to COVID-19. A new release date has not been announced.

Created by Allan Heinberg and artist Jim Cheung, Bishop made her first appearance in Young Avengers #1 in April 2005. In the comics, she is the third character to don the title of Hawkeye after Barton and the Squadron Supreme’s Wyatt McDonald. Like Barton, she is a skilled archer and martial artist. She is usually seen fighting alongside the Young Avengers and the West Coast Avengers.

Steinfeld’s other credits include Dickinson, Charlie’s Angels, Bumblebee, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the Pitch Perfect franchise and True Grit.

Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye stars Jeremey Renner as Clint Barton and Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop. The Disney+ series does not currently have a release date.
