The Toronto Raptors reportedly had discussions with Milwaukee on a deal involving VanVleet for Grayson Allen and a future first-round pick, according to Sportsnet’s Michael Grange and The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
The Bucks hadn’t been one of the teams mentioned in the VanVleet sweepstakes heading into Thursday’s trade deadline. All the buzz surrounding VanVleet was coming from the Phoenix Suns, Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Clippers, and Los Angeles Lakers.
It’s unclear what future first-round pick the Bucks would have dealt Toronto. The organization has already traded away its 2023, 2025, and 2027 first-round picks with pick swaps in 2024 and 2026 with New Orleans. Milwaukee could have traded its 2029 first-round pick or a pick swap in 2028.
Ultimately Toronto opted to stand pat, keeping VanVleet and the rest of its rotation together while adding Jakob Poeltl from the San Antonio Spurs early Thursday morning.
As for the Bucks, the addition of Jae Crowder should help bolster one of the Eastern Conference’s best teams. It would, however, have helped a little more to have VanVleet slide into that starting lineup spot in place of Allen.
VanVleet is averaging 21.7 points, 6.6 assists, and five rebounds over his last 29 games dating back to early December.
