Rep. Ted Yoho calls AOC ‘disgusting’ in Capitol Hill confrontation over comments about spike in NYC crime
Yoho #Yoho
Republican Florida Rep. Ted Yoho ripped into Democratic New York Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a heated confrontation on the U.S. Capitol steps Monday evening.
In a short exchange between the two, Yoho peppered the far-left politician with insults demeaning her intellect and person before accusing the “Squad” leader of losing touch with reality after she suggested that crime has surged in New York City over the summer because of poverty instead of mismanagement and inaction from Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio.
“You are out of your freaking mind,” Yoho told Ocasio-Cortez before adding that she was “disgusting” and a “f—-ing b—-” as he walked away, according to the Hill.
Ocasio-Cortez was taken aback by Yoho’s words, saying she has never been treated with such “disrespect” in all of her life.
“That kind of confrontation hasn’t ever happened to me — ever,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “I’ve never had that kind of abrupt, disgusting kind of disrespect levied at me.”
The freshman congresswoman shot back at Yoho on Tuesday morning, saying, in part, that “b—-es get things done.”
“I never spoke to Rep. Yoho before he decided to accost me on the steps of the nation’s Capitol yesterday,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter. “Believe it or not, I usually get along fine w/ my GOP colleagues. We know how to check our legislative sparring at the committee door. But hey, “b—-es” get stuff done.”
Ocasio-Cortez said during a town hall event in early July that “economic desperation” was the cause of a spike in violence.
“Crime is a problem of a diseased society, which neglects its marginalized people,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Policing is not the solution to crime.” The congresswoman also quipped that New Yorkers had been put in a position “where they feel like they either need to shoplift some bread or go hungry that night.”
Leading conservatives pounced on her words and mocked Ocasio-Cortez over the past two weeks by posting videos of shoplifting and vandalism along with text describing how rioters are actually just trying to get some bread for their families.
Ocasio-Cortez has accused conservatives of taking her words out of context and misleading people about the nuance of what she said.
“I say, ‘Listen, I’m not talking about violent crime, I’m not talking about shootings. But when it comes to petty theft, a lot of these are crimes of poverty, and people are desperate,'” Ocasio-Cortez said. “So the right wing cuts up this clip, per usual, in a very misleading way. … They basically [want] to make it seem as though I’m saying people are shooting each other because they’re hungry.”
