Reneé Rapp Reigns as Regina George in Trailer for Tina Fey’s ‘Mean Girls’ Musical Movie

Mean Girls #MeanGirls

Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for the big screen musical adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway show Mean Girls on Wednesday, teasing a modern take on Tina Fey‘s 2004 teen comedy of the same name.

In the nearly two minute teaser, Cady Heron, Regina George, Janis Ian, Gretchen Wieners, Damian, Karen Smith and Aaron Samuels are all back for this coming of age comedy, but with new actors playing the memorable characters. Angourie Rice stars as Cady, who, after moving from Kenya to a Chicago suburb, finds herself struggling to survive her new high school jungle.

“Are you OK in there,” asks Jaquel Spivey’s Damian, who opens a stall in the girl’s bathroom, where Cady can be seen awkwardly eating her lunch. “We’re concerned you’re either doing drugs or having a toilet baby.”

Damian, along with his friend Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) quickly help Cady navigate her whole new world as she seeks to find her place in a universe run by the “Plastics.” That includes queen bee Regina George, portrayed by Reneé Rapp, who played Regina in the Broadway musical, Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika). “You could be really hot if you change, like, everything,” Regina tells the camera in the teaser.

It’s a challenge Cady is willing to accept after Regina backstabs her over Aaron Samuels, Regina’s ex and the boy the newcomer has developed a serious crush on. Focused on taking down the Apex predator, Cady, Janis and Damian set out to ruin Regina’s image and status, ingraining Cady into her nemesis’ life, which includes that infamous burn book and a desperate to be cool Mrs. George (Busy Philipps).

“We will help you Cady,” says Cravalho’s Janis, before all hell breaks loose. “We’re going to make her pay.”

The trailer doesn’t feature the musical’s music, but it is complete with new takes on the trio’s hijinks to sabotage Regina; Cady missing the memo on slutty Halloween (“Cady, if you don’t dress slutty, that’s slut-shaming us.”); a classic “get in, loser,” moment; and a painful talent show performance of “Jingle Bell Rock.” That’s alongside dance breaks and a cameo from the Broadway musical’s very own Gretchen, Ashley Park.

Fey, who wrote the screenplay, reprises her role as Ms. Norbury along with Tim Meadows, who is once again Principal Duvall. The film also stars Jenna Fischer as Cady’s mom, Jon Hamm as Coach Carr, Mahi Alam as Kevin Ganatra and Connor Ratliff as Mr. Rapp.

Mean Girls, which was set to debut on Paramount+ but has since garnered a theatrical release of Jan. 12, 2024, is directed by Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne.
