Remembering Tony Parker’s injury in a bar fight between Drake and Chris Brown

The Chisme is a culture series looking at San Antonio’s fun facts, useless trivia, and, of course, local chisme of varying degrees.

Then a guard for the Spurs, Parker was at New York City nightclub W.i.P in June 2012 when a fight erupted between members of fellow rapper Drake’s entourage and R&B singer Chris Brown, the latter of whom Parker was joining.

If anyone needs reminding, Drake’s feud with Brown was over their mutual ex-girlfriend: singer, businesswoman, and self-made billionaire Rihanna. Brown reportedly wanted to make peace with Drake and sent over a $2,000 bottle of champagne, which was ultimately rejected by the Houston-obsessed rapper.

At the time, the basketball star says he and “his friends took some punches” in the fight that included bottles being thrown and glass flying inside the Manhattan hotspot.

Parker said the brawl left him with a scratched cornea on one eye. He went to an emergency room in Paris after his pain worsened and ended up undergoing surgery to remove glass that had penetrated his eye. He also wore a “therapeutic” contact lens and used eye drops during his recovery. Luckily for Parker, he was medically cleared and suited up for the French national team during the 2012 London Olympics later that summer.

Shortly after the celebrity-packed brawl, Parker filed a $20 million lawsuit against W.i.P.’s owners, maintaining that they should be responsible for injuries brought on by the fight. The lawsuit also called out the nightclub for seating the musicians near each other despite their very public disdain for each other, as well as serving liquor to already-intoxicated patrons. The nightclub was actually shut down following the negative attention that highlighted its past violent nights and multiple complaints backed up by police reports.
