Red Sox legend’s wife is ticked off at Curt Schilling
Tim Wakefield #TimWakefield
Red Sox legend Jason Varitek’s wife, Catherine, took to social media on Thursday to air her displeasure with Curt Schilling.
Schilling, who was teammates with Varitek from 2004 to 2007, announced that former another teammate, knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, has been diagnosed with a “very serious, very aggressive” form of brain cancer on his podcast on Tuesday. He admitted that he wasn’t sure if Wakefield wanted the information to be shared, but was seeking prayers.
Schilling also revealed that Wakefield’s wife, Stacey, is also battling pancreatic cancer.
Catherine Varitek wasn’t happy with Schilling taking it upon himself to make this news public. She posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter:
“F— you Curt Schilling, that wasn’t your place!”
The Variteks aren’t afraid of a little conflict. Jason Varitek, of course, squared off with Álex Rodríguez in 2004 after the Yankees’ third baseman took exception to being hit by a pitch thrown by Bronson Arroyo. This resulted in Varitek smashing his catcher’s mitt into Rodríguez’s face as the benches cleared.
In a 2021 broadcast of “Sunday Night Baseball,” Rodríguez revealed that he and Varitek have not spoken since then. Even when they were teammates on Team USA during the 2006 World Baseball Classic, the two didn’t speak.
The former catcher retired from MLB in 2011. He slashed .256/.341/.435 in his 15-year career. He leads all Red Sox catchers all-time in hits (1307)m home runs (193) and RBI (757).
Varitek, who played his entire career with the Red Sox, is now the team’s Game Planning Coordinator and Catching Coach.
