BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today agreed to terms with Rafael Devers on a one-year contract for the 2023 season, thus avoiding salary arbitration.
Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.
With today’s agreement, there are six remaining unsigned Red Sox players eligible for salary arbitration: Christian Arroyo, Ryan Brasier, Reese McGuire, Nick Pivetta, Josh Taylor, and Alex Verdugo.
Devers, 26, was the American League’s starting third baseman in the 2021 and 2022 All-Star Games. A 2021 Silver Slugger Award winner, he finished in the top 15 in MVP voting in 2019 (12th), 2021 (11th), and 2022 (14th). In 141 games last season, he batted .295 (164-for-555) with an .879 OPS, 42 doubles, 27 home runs, and 88 RBI.
Originally signed by Boston as an international free agent in 2013, Devers made his Major League debut in 2017 and has since played in 689 games, batting .283 (762-for-2,697) with an .854 OPS, 139 home runs, and 455 RBI. Since the beginning of 2019, he leads the majors in doubles (149) and extra-base hits (264) and leads the AL in hits (591) and total bases (1,078).
