By India Today Web Desk: Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has claimed that the team wants to retain their UEFA Champions League crown after a thrilling 5-2 comeback win over Liverpool on Tuesday.
In a repeat of last season’s UCL final, the game started in poor fashion for Los Blancos as they found themselves a 2-0 lead within the first 15 minutes of the game.
Darwin Nunez had put the Reds in front in the fourth minute of the game with a sensational finish. Thibaut Courtois then had a moment to forget in the 14th minute as his error helped Mohamed Salah double Liverpool’s advantage.
The match then turned on its head when Vinicius Jr helped the UCL holders to get one back in the 21st minute with a fine strike. Alisson Becker then had a howler as his clearance ricocheted off the Brazilian forward and back into his own net.
Eder Militao then made it 3-2 in favour of Madrid in the 47th minute before Benzema hit two more goals in the second-half to help Los Blancos seal the advantage heading into the second leg.
Speaking to the reporters, as quoted by Reuters, Benzema said that Madrid are looking to retain the UCL title and said that the team showed personality in their comeback win.
The French forward said that while the team is in a good position at the moment, he wants Los Blancos to close the deal at the Santiago Bernabeu.
“It’s an important night for us, we showed personality and scored the goals we needed. We want this Champions League title,” Benzema told Movistar Plus.
“We struggled in the beginning, they started well, better than us, it was a big game. But we managed to turn things around. We are in a good position but football is tricky and we have to close the deal at home.”
