Real Madrid are keen on signing Manchester United star Diogo Dalot having failed to land former Manchester City man Joao Cancelo.

After a difficult first few seasons at Old Trafford, Dalot has now grown into a fine player under Erik ten Hag, playing nearly every minute of football prior to the World Cup break.

While a mixture of injury and the resurgent form of Aaron Wan-Bissaka has seen him rotated more in recent weeks, the 23-year-old is still viewed as a key man in United’s side and as a result he is attracting interest from elsewhere.

AS report that Real Madrid have identified the right-back as the perfect long-term replacement for veteran Dani Carvajal and are hoping to take advantage of his contract situation.

Dalot’s current deal only runs to 2024, though United are working to agree new terms with a number of players who are entering the last 18 months of their contract, including Dalot, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford.

Real have recently had success in signing top defenders from Europe’s biggest clubs on free transfers, most notably Antonio Rudiger from Chelsea and David Alaba from Bayern Munich.

However, the report also claims that Los Blancos were also very interested in Cancelo who became available for a transfer in late-January following a fall out with Pep Guardiola.

Carlo Ancelotti was keen on the attacking full-back but others at the Santiago Bernabeu were unsure on the signing with question marks over his attitude and age.

In the end, the 29-year-old joined Bayern on loan on deadline with the Bundesliga giants seemingly set to trigger his £62million buy out clause, especially following his strong start to life at the Allianz Arena.

With this is mind, Real have turned their attention to Cancelo’s younger Portugal teammate Dalot, who could next be in action when United host Leicester on Sunday.
