Manager Steve Clarke admitted there was a tear in his eye as Scotland ended the country’s 22-year wait to qualify for a major tournament by dramatically beating Serbia on penalties. Scotland are one of Euro 2020’s 12 co-hosts and they claimed the very last of the 24 places at the finals, their play-off in Belgrade being the last to finish of the four on the night.

After only 18 months in the job Clarke has steered Scotland to a nine-game unbeaten run which ended the agonising wait to make it back to a tournament for the first time since France ’98, something which was beyond Berti Vogts, Walter Smith, George Burley, Craig Levein, Gordon Strachan and Alex McLeish over his two spells in charge, although
