Manchester United have reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of Raphael Varane, the Premier League club has announced on Tuesday.

The France international is set to depart Real Madrid for Manchester in a $48 million (£35 million) deal with only a medical standing between the 28-year-old and the completion of his move. United’ statement confirming the agreement between the two clubs said that player terms must still be “finalized,” but sources have indicated to CBS Sports that all key issues have already been agreed.

Varane, a three-time Spanish and four time European champion with Madrid, established himself as one of Europe’s best defenders during his 10-year spell in La Liga and was offered a glowing send off by his soon to be former club. “Real Madrid wants to show all its affection to Raphael Varane and his family and wishes him good luck in this new stage of his professional career,” they said in a statement.

“Our club thanks you for your professionalism and exemplary behavior during the 10 seasons in which you defended our shirt.”

Madrid had opted to cash in on Varane as he entered the final year of his contract with no agreement between player and club over an extension. The Spanish giants have also lost his center back partner Sergio Ramos this summer but strengthened their defense with the addition of David Alaba from Bayern Munich on a free transfer.

Varane will become United’s second major signing of the summer after Jadon Sancho joined from Borussia Dortmund for $100 million. Their former goalkeeper Tom Heaton also returned to Old Trafford on a free transfer.
