Rangers team news as Jack Simpson and Kemar Roofe handed starts but Scott Wright misses out again

Roofe #Roofe

STEVEN GERRARD has overlooked Scott Wright once again by leaving him out for today’s Old Firm clash at Ibrox.

But there is a Glasgow Derby debut for Jack Simpson and Kemar Roofe also starts.

Wright came on as a sub for Ianis Hagi during Gers’ Scottish Cup exit to St Johnstone last weekend but doesn’t get the nod from the off.

Mercurial striker Alfredo Morelos keeps his place despite being subbed off with ten minutes left of normal time against the Perth Saints.

Given the consistent transfer speculation around the Colombian, today could be his last game against Celtic.

Gerrard confirmed during the week that Simpson would be making his Old Firm debut in defence and he starts alongside Connor Goldson while Filip Helander will play no part in his side’s final three games of the campaign due to injury.

The Light Blues go with their tried-and-tested midfield three of Steven Davis, Joe Aribo and Glen Kamara as Scott Arfield continues to be sidelined through injury.

On the opposite wing from Roofe is Ryan Kent.

Allan McGregor maintains his presence in goal with skipper James Tavernier and Borna Barisic occupying the full-back spots.

Rangers team to face Celtic

RANGERS XI: McGregor, Tavernier, Goldson, Simpson, Barisic, Davis, Kamara, Aribo, Roofe, Kent, Morelos.

Subs:  McLaughlin, King, Hagi, Stewart, Wright, Itten, Defoe.

Former Gers right-back Alan Hutton said that a fit James Forrest would be “huge” for Celtic.

The Hoops winger is in from the start today and Hutton thinks his presence could exploit a possible weakness in the Ibrox defence.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “Huge, absolutely massive for Celtic.

“Coming back from the injury, he showed us what Celtic have been missing for a long period of time.

“That directness, the pace that he’s got, he can run in behind. I was actually a little bit nervous ahead of the last Old Firm game because I was thinking if he plays and Barisic is high, he can work that space in behind them.

“[Martin] Boyle did it against Rangers for Hibs so I was a bit nervous about that. Obviously, if he’s back for this game, that’s going to be a problem. It’s something that Gerrard will need to address and be very careful of.”
