RANGERS goalkeeper Jack Butland has discovered his fate surrounding a recall to the England squad.

The former Birmingham, Stoke and Crystal Palace man has nine caps for the Three Lions, but he has not been called up for his country since 2019.

And it will stay that way as he was SNUBBED from the 25-man squad for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium as England warm up for Euro 2024 in Germany.

It means that in all likelihood, Butland’s dreams of representing his country at the Euros are dashed.

The announcement comes as an even bigger shock given that reports earlier today strongly suggested Butland was IN the squad for the March camp.

Butland had been hoping his outstanding form for Philippe Clement’s side could tempt selectors for the two Wembley dates after 17 clean sheets in the Scottish Premiership so far this season.

The 31-year-old last played for his country against Switzerland way back in September 2018 and could have a chance of making the tournament team with Nick Pope injured and Aaron Ramsdale out of favour at Arsenal.

Jordan Pickford, Sam Johnstone and Ramsdale have been included ahead of the Gers man.

Southgate revealed he was considering a recall for the Bristol-born No1 when asked about his options between the sticks earlier this year.

He said: “It is an issue and it is up in the air. I can’t deny that, so we have to make sure we’re watching everybody.

“Jack is included in that because he’s playing at a big club and is an experienced goalkeeper.

“It’s not an ideal situation with Aaron [Ramsdale] not playing, Sam [Johnstone] at the moment not playing and Nick [Pope] injured. We’ll have to see how it plays out.”

The stopper himself spoke about his international ambitions.

The ex-Manchester United loanee admitted he was desperate to represent his nation again.

Butland said: “I’ve had my moments where I have been, in my opinion, the best in England.

“All I can do is do what I’m doing. I haven’t been in that England squad for a while.

“If I said it was at the forefront of my mind, no. If it comes, absolutely I would love it.

“Ultimately, I have to do the job for Rangers. At the minute we’re playing regularly in some great competitions and we have European football to come.

“Hopefully that is a good platform to continue to showcase that.”

Joe Gomez has been recalled for the squad though.
