Connor Goldson spotted on crutches
He pulled up and had to receive treatment after making a stretch for the ball, with Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez challenging him.
Goldson was unable to continue and was forced off as the match approached half-time.
18-year-old Leon King replaced him as he paired up with Ben Davies at the heart of the defence for the remainder of the clash.
It could be a devastating news for the Rangers with Goldson establishing himself as a stalwart in the Ibrox side in the last couple of seasons.
He has been Mr Reliable for Gio van Bronckhorst since he took over the hot-seat in Glasgow, but he may now have to live without the Englishman if it turns out to be a serious setback.
It didn’t end there for the Dutchman too as Ryan Jack had to be replaced with an injury of his own in the second period as well.
After the game, Van Bronckhorst revealed: “Both aren’t good – they couldn’t continue.
“For Connor, he tore something in his muscle, we have to wait and see exactly what the injury is. The same for Ryan, we have to assess how long it will be.”
Aside from losing Goldson and Jack though, it was a promising start for the Gers against the Premier League giants.
Scott Arfield shocked the visitors as he fired Rangers ahead after 17 minutes.
Antonio Colak handed the ball on a plate for the 33-year-old, but he still had work to do as he picked it up outside the box.
But that didn’t stop him from having a pop at goal as he fired it past Liverpool stopper Alisson to give his side the one-goal lead.
They didn’t hold onto it for long though as Roberto Firmino answered back less than 10 minutes later as he headed home from Konstantinos Tsimikas corner.
The Brazilian forward made it two for Liverpool in the second half as he smashed the ball through Allan McGregor’s legs after Joe Gomez’s whipped in cross reached him in the box.
Nunez and Salah added to the scoring in the second half as well.
