Rangers player ratings: Dessers a handful despite defeat to Celtic
Dessers #Dessers
Jack Butland 6
Left with little chance to prevent Kyogo’s stunning opener. Tipped Abada effort round the post with Maeda lurking. Smart stop to deny Holm’s effort from range.
James Tavernier 6
Huge effort and application on the right flank but lacked the final end product to haul his side back into the match. Sent free-kick wide and whipped crosses didn’t find team-mate in box.
Connor Goldson 7
Largely comfortable but a couple of hairy moments in the Rangers rearguard. Ended up being one of Rangers’ best attacking weapons with long balls over the top of Celtic defence causing serious problems.
John Souttar 5
Not his finest outing in a Rangers jersey. Didn’t see as much of the ball and was tested with the rapid frontline of Celtic. Caught out playing Kyogo onside for the winning goal.
Dujon Sterling 7
Thrown in for his first league start on the big occasion and handled it well. Solid defensively and bright going forward in flashes. Looks ready for more opportunities from the start for Rangers.
Ryan Jack 5
Pretty anonymous in the first half of the match. Unable to dictate the play in midfield as Celtic took control. Like many of his team-mates, grew into the game but not up to standard.
Nicolas Raskin 5
Suffered a similar fate to team-mates in first half with match passing him by. Started to show quality in second period with Rangers on top. Terrific pass to Lammers with minutes left should have seen him bag an assist.
Todd Cantwell 5
A key figure for Rangers but a little off the boil for much of the match. Started to turn the screw in closing stages but wasn’t enough. Claims for a penalty after challenge from Maeda waved away and volley in stoppage time easily held by Hart.
Rabbi Matondo 5
A real livewire in the opening exchanges, typified by his goal disallowed by the offside flag within the first minute. Faded slightly but determined to create any time he did have the ball albeit against a tough rival in Alistair Johnston.
Kemar Roofe 5
Thought he had hammered home an opener after 28 minutes only for it to be disallowed. Full of quality but somewhat limited in the opportunities he had as Celtic dominated the ball for large spells. There was disappointment around Ibrox when he was subbed off after an hour.
Cyriel Dessers 6
A real thorn in the side of the Celtic defence – but without consequence. Constant harrying almost led to opener but for soft free-kick awarded for his tackle on Lagerbielke. Teed up Matondo’s offside goal within a minute too. Plenty of endeavour but little to show for it as Rangers again struggled to find the net.
Sam Lammers (for Matondo, 64) 4
Passed up a glorious chance to equalise. Rounded Joe Hart but then sclaffed into the side netting after tremendous Raskin reverse pass.
Danilo (for Roofe, 64) 4
Two huge chances six minutes from time. First excellent control before being denied by Hart, the second was weak and ought to have further tested Hart from close range.
Ridvan Yilmaz (for Sterling, 64) 3
Struggled to match pace of the game but grew into it and offered good runs forward and a handful of decent balls into the box.
Abdallah Sima (for Dessers, 76) 2
Thrown on as Rangers chased an equaliser.
Tom Lawrence (for Jack, 76) 2
A positive to have him back for Michael Beale, but couldn’t spark a comeback.
