Glasgow Rangers have the chance to redeem themselves today following a woeful midweek Champions League performance.
They face Motherwell just four days after being thrashed 7-1 by Liverpool at Ibrox, and it is imperative that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men secure another three Premiership points.
There will likely be plenty of changes to the side which took to the field in midweek, with Connor Goldson and Ryan Jack both coming off with injuries, and unfortunately it looks like they will be missing for the long-term.
One player who has earned the right to be unleashed against Motherwell today is Fashion Sakala, with the Zambian being one of Van Bronckhorst’s brightest sparks over the past two weeks.
Sakala started for the first time in the league this season against St Mirren last Saturday as Rangers ran out comfortable 4-0 winners, and he suitably impressed that afternoon.
The 25-year-old received a rating of 8.6 from SofaScore, the second highest on the pitch, while he scored, grabbed an assist and made one key pass in that game at Ibrox.
He succeeded with seven of his eight dribble attempts, causing problems down the right-hand side for St Mirren, while he was also strong in one-on-one situations as he won nine out of 14 duels.
Journalist Josh Bunting praised Sakala following his performance against Liverpool in midweek before it all went wrong for Rangers, saying that the Zambian he had been “impressive” in the first half; while former Ibrox right-back Alan Hutton has dubbed him a “firework” in the past.
The £8.3k-per-week livewire also has an excellent record against Motherwell, scoring five goals against them last season while also registering two assists, and this should be enough to convince the Dutchman that the 25-year-old deserves another start at Fir Park this afternoon.
With the pressure now firmly on Van Bronckhorst due to some poor results this season, nothing less than three points will do, however they come. Even then, to certain sections of the fan base, it might not be enough just to win.
