Raine Maida actually found a good use for Blockchain

Raine #Raine

Yes, that Raine Maida.

I first had the opportunity to meet him in 2017. The Our Lady Peace frontman was preparing to launch his video-focused social app RecMob and wanted to drum up media interest. I thought, what the hell, I’ll go meet Raine Maida.

“I also love shipping product. These guys probably want to kill me most days.”

While I didn’t leave that meeting particularly excited for RecMob’s prospects (social apps are very hard), I was impressed by Maida, who demonstrated over a short coffee conversation both business and product chops. Unlike other celebrity-fronted enterprises, this multi-platinum recording artist was a legit entrepreneur.

Maida is now back as CPO for a new app S!NG, which allows musicians to record and send ideas to the blockchain for both collaborations and to ensure those ideas don’t get stolen. Might I say this is the first good use of NFTs and the blockchain I’ve heard of?

Maida joins the BetaKit Podcast for a wide-ranging conversation about blockchain, IP protection, and the future of music creation and ownership in a digital world. We also talk a fair bit about the new OLP album record during the pandemic and its new single, which you can listen to now.

It’s my podcast, I can do what I want. But it’s also important for you to hear from both Maida the musician and Maida the entrepreneur, because few people are truly able to walk both paths.

Let’s dig in.
