DUBLIN, Ohio — Jon Rahm won the Memorial on Sunday to join Seve Ballesteros as the only Spaniards to reach No. 1 in the world. Rahm, who had built an eight-shot lead at the turn, closed with a 3-over 75 for a three-shot victory over Ryan Palmer, the highest final round by a Memorial winner since Roger Maltbie shot 76 in the inaugural year in 1976.
Jack Nicklaus revealed Sunday during the CBS telecast of the Memorial that he and his wife tested positive for the coronavirus at the onset of the pandemic in March. Nicklaus and his wife, Barbara, turned 80 a month apart at the start of the year. He said his wife had no COVID-19 symptoms, while Nicklaus had a sore throat and a cough.
Auto racing: Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix for the eighth time, tying Michael Schumacher’s single-venue record and taking the championship lead. Schumacher won the French GP eight times at Magny-Cours. Hamilton’s 86th GP win moved him five behind Schumacher’s F1 record of 91.
MLB: The Blue Jays’ front office has concerns over the infrastructure of Buffalo’s minor league stadium and is working to find a major league ballpark for the team to use this year after Canada’s government barred Toronto from playing in Rogers Centre, its home stadium, amid the coronavirus pandemic.
NFL: Players are publicly pleading with the league to address several health and safety concerns on the eve of training camp. The league informed teams on Saturday that training camps will open on time even though discussions with the players’ union regarding testing for the coronavirus and other health and safety protocols are ongoing. Rookies for Houston and Kansas City are set to report Monday and rookies for other teams are due on Tuesday. Players for all teams are scheduled to report by July 28.
NHL: Penguins’ captain and two-time MVP Sidney Crosby did not practice on Sunday, a day after leaving an intrasquad scrimmage with an undisclosed health issue.
