Purdue vs North Texas live updates: Purdue trails March Madness first round

The No. 4 seed Purdue Boilermakers play the No. 13 seed North Texas Mean Green at 7:25 p.m. Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Lucas Oil Stadium. The game will be shown on TNT. Jaden Ivey is up to 21 points, but no other Boilers are in double figures. 15+ minutes into the second half, and North Texas has committed 0 turnovers after halftime. The Mean Green remain close to 50% shooting overall and from 3-point range.

9:10 p.m. — North Texas expands the lead again 

Just after the Boilers get within 1, the Mean Green score 8 in a row. Javion Hamlet has 16 points. It’s 55-49 with 7:11 remaining. Jaden Ivey is the lone Purdue player in double figures with 18. 

9 p.m. — Purdue narrows the deficit 

Jaden Ivey is shooting for an And-1 with 10:42 left coming out of a media timeout. (He made it, and Purdue is down 47-46.) Isaiah Thompson’s 3-pointer had brought Purdue within 45-43, but North Texas countered with a dunk. 

8:50 p.m. — North Texas 3s vs. Purdue 2s 

The Boilermakers narrow their deficit to 41-37, but North Texas is 7-of-14 on 3-pointers. 

8:45 p.m. — North Texas 38, Purdue 33, 16:54 left 

Mardrez McBride has a couple of 3-pointers early in the second half, allowing North Texas to maintain some distance on Purdue, which is starting to flow offensively. Timeout North Texas. 

8:40 p.m. — Mason Gillis is all over the place 

Gillis has 3 rebounds on Purdue’s first possession of the second half and ends up with a 3-point play. Purdue is down 32-27.  

8:20 p.m. — Purdue trails 32-24 at halftime 

Thomas Bell has 9 and Javion Hamlet 8 for North Texas, which is shooting 50% and has committed just 3 turnovers. Sasha Stefanovic has 9 points and Jaden Ivey 8 for the Boilermakers, who have shot 30%. Big men Trevion Williams and Zach Edey have 2 fouls each. Edey has 2 blocked shots. 

8 p.m. — Purdue’s deficit grows 

Javion Hamlet, North Texas’ leading scorer, doesn’t score for 15+ minutes, but he hits a pair of 3-pointers to put the Mean Green ahead 27-18 with 5:21 left in the first half. Timeout Purdue. 

7:55 p.m. — Purdue still trails 

Trevion Williams has a couple of turnovers. The Mean Green are shooting 57% and the Boilers are at 33% against a scrappy North Texas defense. Purdue trails 19-15 with 7:59 left in the first half. Sasha Stefanovic has 7 points, Mason Gillis 5 rebounds. 

7:45 p.m. — North Texas stays hot  

The Mean Green hit 5-of-6 shot in one stretch and lead 16-13 with 11:39 left in the first half.  The Boilers are 3-of-9 on 3-pointers, 1-of-4 from closer.  

7:35 p.m. — North Texas leads 9-6 at first media timeout 

Thomas Bell has 7 points for North Texas. The Boilers have 2 3-pointers. 

 7:30 p.m. — North Texas gains the lead 

The first sequence went Purdue’s way — a Mean Green turnover followed by a Jaden Ivey 3-pointer. But North Texas scored 7 in a row and drew Trevion Williams’ first foul in the process. Zach Edey came in to sub. 

7:20 p.m. — Purdue’s starting lineup 

Boilers fans know this group.
