Pundit: Jack Grealish has got it badly wrong at Man City after confirmed news – ‘what the hell?’

Frank McAvennie has claimed Jack Grealish and Kalvin Phillips have hurt their chances of being included in the England World Cup squad after joining Man City.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said Gareth Southgate won’t pick the City duo for the World Cup games due to their lack of playing time.

As revealed by Sky Sports (15 September), both Grealish and Phillips have been included in the England squad for the upcoming Nations League games.

Grealish has made just two appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side this season.

Phillips has only played one minute for the Manchester club.

On 4 July, City confirmed the signing of the 26-year-old from Leeds United.

The midfielder put pen to paper on a six-year deal at the Etihad.

McAvennie suggested that Grealish and Phillips will continue to struggle for game time at City.

“Man City have an abundance of players,” he told Football Insider.

“If you’re not going to be like [Kevin] De Bruyne and [Erling] Haaland, you’re not going to be playing every week because they’ve got that much talent. It’s just a shame.

“Kalvin Phillips is another one who’s not done anything. Gareth isn’t going to pick them. Southgate won’t pick Grealish if he’s not been playing. He won’t pick Phillips either. He knows what he can do but unless you’re playing he won’t pick you.

“Phillips must be wondering what the hell’s happened. It was such a big move but he’s not playing. I would’ve looked at the midfield and thought ‘who am I going to replace’. I’d have thought about that before I took the money. I’m a big fan of Grealish so I hope he gets in.“

In other news, Kevin Campbell has suggested Man City handed advantage over Liverpool in title race after official announcement.
