Pundit issues ‘big’ Thiago Alcantara verdict after early Liverpool team news

Kevin Campbell has heaped praise on Thiago Alcantara as the Liverpool midfielder prepares to make his return from injury.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker suggested the 31-year-old can reinvigorate Jurgen Klopp’s side with his passing range and control in midfield.

Thiago has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury on the opening day of the season against Fulham.

The Reds have lost to Man United and drew with Crystal Palace in the Spain international’s absence.

This week Thiago returned to training ahead of fixtures against Napoli and Wolves.

Speaking to club media (6 September), Klopp said the centre-midfielder “is ready” to face Napoli on Wednesday but did not specify for how long.

When asked by Football Insider for his reaction to the news, Campbell said: “Liverpool have missed his know-how and his experience.

“No disrespect to Harvey Elliott and [Fabio] Carvalho but this guy is top-class. Any team would miss a player with his experience and ability.

“He has such a great passing range. He controls the midfield and that is something Liverpool have lacked. When you control the midfield and have a passing range like that, wow.

“That is what [Mohamed] Salah, [Darwin] Nunez and [Luis] Diaz might need. Thiago can pick a pass and unlock a door.

“He has been a big miss for them so I’m sure Klopp is delighted to have him back.”

In other news, Kieran Maguire expects Liverpool to cash in from a new deal ‘very soon’ after a £428million U-turn.
