LINDEN — State Police at Montoursville offered more details regarding an armed robbery that took place at Sheetz along Route 220 in Woodward Township, Lycoming County on Feb. 11.

The robbery was carried out by Clifford Edward Wilbur Jr. 38, who was shot and killed after a police chase ending in the 3500 block of West Fourth Street that night, police report.

According to police, Wilbur walked into the store at 9:50 p.m. and attempted to purchase alcohol and cigarettes.

The manager asked Wilbur for ID to purchase the alcohol. When she saw his name, the manager recognized him as being wanted by police for a domestic situation, police said.

The manager told Wilbur his total and he stared off not paying attention. After being told his total multiple times, Wilbur left the store without paying or taking the beer and cigarettes, police said.

After the encounter the manager attempted to make contact with PSP Montoursville to report Wilbur had been in the store, police said.

Minutes later, Wilbur returned to the Sheetz and brought two 24 ounce beers to the counter, police said.

The juvenile cashier told Wilbur that he was under 18 and couldn’t sell him alcohol.

Wilbur then said, “just to let you know I’m taking these…” and pulled a handgun out of his left pocket with his left hand, police said.

Wilbur laid the gun on the counter while pointing it at the juvenile cashier who gave no resistance, police said.

Wilbur left the Sheetz on foot before police arrived.

Wilbur was described to police as being calm during the robbery and speaking in a low tone.

A review of the security camera footage on scene revealed Wilbur fled the scene in a gold colored vehicle.

Wilbur fled in his vehicle and crashed in the 3500 block of West Fourth Street in the city, police said.

Police said Wilbur brandished a handgun and troopers discharged their weapons, striking and killing Wilbur.

Wilbur was pronounced dead by Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr.
