A protest group is set to hold rallies across the country demanding an end to the “fascist coup” following the attack on the U.S. Capitol by Donald Trump supporters.
The RefuseFacism group has already been holding rallies against the Trump administration “every day until Biden’s election is certified.”
Now, in the wake of the violent riot involving far-right extremists and conspiracy theorists that erupted on Wednesday, the group is promoting rallies in cities such as Atlanta, New York, Houston and Los Angeles as a “time to stand up” against the “fascist coup.”
Promoting one of the protests, Refuse Fascism tweeted: “In #Chicago meet at Wacker & Wabash 5pm Thursday. The leader of the #coup just goes back to the presidential mansion? Oh hell no.”
In a statement to Newsweek, the group added: “This was an attempt at a coup. It will not likely succeed this time, but the danger from even a failed coup is to be taken seriously, setting the stage for them to come back sooner or later to re-seize power—with or without Trump.
“It leaves a bloc of elected officials who view and act as if the Biden administration is illegitimate and an armed street-fighting force ‘on call’ to dominate the public square. They will continue to fight for their white supremacist, xenophobic and patriarchal program. And they will continue to undermine the very concept of truth—leaving tens of millions to be susceptible to the calls of demagogues and the vilest conspiracy theories.

“Trump is still in power. There are 13 days in which he and/or his followers present a real and present danger to humanity.”
The unprecedented attack on the Capitol left four people dead, including a woman who was shot by police.
There were more than 50 arrests, with Vice President Mike Pence among those promising that the people who caused mayhem in the corridors of Congress would be “prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Several U.S, lawmakers have described the attack as an attempted coup, spurred by Trump’s divisive rhetoric and frequent cries that he lost the election because of widespread voter fraud, as well as his failure to denounce his far-right supporters.
“Make no mistake, this was a coup attempt instigated by President Trump. Everyone who has aided and abetted him for the past four years bears responsibility for today’s violence,” said Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut.
“January 6 will go down as a dark day in United States history, but our democracy will prevail over the violent mob that ransacked our Capitol. In two weeks, President-elect Biden will take office and begin the work of healing our nation.
Florida Rep. Val Demings tweeted: “A mob storming the U.S. Capitol to overturn an election. A coup in progress. A dark day for America.
“But this is what they always wanted. Don’t let them deny it. They will lose. We will not be intimidated. Democracy will win.”
Adam Kinzinger, a Republican congressman from Illinois, told CNN: “Anywhere else around the globe, we would call this a coup attempt. I think that’s what this is.”
