Prince Harry’s Memoir Spare Just Got a 2023 Release Date

Spare #Spare

Call your book club and charge your kindle—Prince Harry’s memoir is coming.

On Thursday, October 27, Penguin Random House revealed more details about the Duke of Sussex’s hotly anticipated memoir, including the official release date and first look at the cover. According to the publisher, the 416-page memoir, titled Spare, will be released on January 10, 2023. It is currently available for pre-order.

“It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on,” reads the description on Penguin Random House’s website. “For Harry, this is that story at last.”

The publisher goes on to describe Spare as “a landmark publication full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.” Though there’s no info provided about the origins of the title, it’s a safe bet that “Spare” is a reference to Harry’s boyhood status as the “royal spare”—second in line to throne until his brother, Prince William, welcomed an heir of his own, Prince George.

Though the memoir was announced back in July 2021, its status had been up in the air following the death of Queen Elizabeth back in September. First it was reported that the publication had been delayed, and then rumors swirled that the Prince was having doubts about some of the revelations in the book. With an official release date, however, it looks like those rumors can be laid to rest.

“I’m writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become,” Harry said in the initial 2021 press release. “I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story—the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned—I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I’ve learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a firsthand account of my life that’s accurate and wholly truthful.”
