Portugal 2-4 Germany LIVE! Jota, Gosens, Havertz, Ronaldo goals; Euros match stream, latest score updates today
Jota #Jota
Group F – aka the ‘Group of Death’ – at Euro 2020 has been blown wide open after a day of exhilarating drama.
France’s shock draw with Hungary in Budapest earlier on Saturday was followed by an epic heavyweight tussle between Portugal and Germany in Munich that set a new standard as the best game of the tournament so far.
The defending champions took an early lead completely against the run of play at the Allianz Arena, with all-time European Championship top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo finishing off a brilliant counter-attack to move within just two goals of Ali Daei’s international record.
However, two quick-fire own goals from Ruben Dias and Raphael Guerreiro then turned the contest on its head, with Kai Havertz and man of the match Robin Gosens inflicting more damage for resurgent Germany after the interval.
Diogo Jota reduced the deficit to keep things interesting before Renato Sanches cannoned a remarkable effort against the post, but Germany held on to get their Euros campaign up and running and move second in a fascinating Group F.
Portugal vs Germany highlights
Santos takes blame for Portugal loss after midfield tweak 20:45 , George Flood
Fernando Santos insists he is to blame for Portugal’s defeat in Munich after making an error with his midfield calculations.
“We just tweaked our midfield tactics for the match. We just wanted to press the midfield players – Gundogan and Kroos – and we wanted our full-backs to drive forward,” Santos said at his post-match press conference.
“But it was clear to see that we were always short of an extra man in the midfield and were pushed back. It was my strategy and I’m fully responsible for it.
“In the first half, they suffered just two fouls. If we can’t stop them, if we have issues having possession, then we have problems.”
He added: “The players should have been able to cover the right-hand side. But I don’t want to blame them.
“Whether we progress or not is still up to us. And we must respond against France.”
Low hails ‘amazing’ Gosens display 20:04 , George Flood
Robin Gosens was unsurprisingly awarded man-of-the-match honours in Munich this evening and Germany boss Joachim Low was full of praise for his oustanding performance.
“I don’t know if it was the game of a lifetime for him, maybe he still has to play that,” Low said.
“But an amazing performance from him. He worked very hard and on top of that he was a constant threat up front as well. That is exactly what we needed today.”

Portugal 2-4 Germany
What a game in Munich! Germany get their Euro 2020 campaign up and running.
The ‘Group of Death’ is wide open…
18:53 , George Flood
93 mins: A late surge from Portugal after Kroos concedes possession cheaply, with Ronaldo teeing up Andre Silva.
However, Ginter is there to make an important last-ditch challenge.
18:51 , George Flood
90 mins: Sanches is frustrated after being penalised for a foul on Kroos as he hammers the ball into the advertising hoardings.
Ronaldo then gets a piece of skill wrong near the byline and the ball goes behind harmlessly for a goal kick.
Four minutes of added time signalled at the Allianz Arena…
18:48 , George Flood
89 mins: Now it’s Rudiger called into action with Ronaldo lurking after Pepe does brilliantly to head Moutinho’s cross back across goal!
Germany’s defenders have to stay alert here as Portugal pile on the late pressure and look to set up a furious final few minutes in Munich.
18:47 , George Flood
88 mins: Sule comes across to deal with the danger as Nelson Semedo sprints into the box following a lovely flick from the fleet-footed Rafa Silva.
18:45 , George Flood
85 mins: A break in play now after a clash of heads between Danilo and Muller.
Portugal haven’t really kicked on since that Jota goal, Sanches rocket aside.
On comes Leroy Sane for Germany. Gnabry makes way after a fine display.
18:42 , George Flood
82 mins: Germany come close to a fifth that would surely guarantee all three points in Group F, but a rifled effort from Goretzka lands on the roof of the net.
Portugal throw on another forward as Eintracht Frankfurt striker Andre Silva replaces Jota.
Time is running out for Ronaldo and Co here…
18:41 , George Flood
80 mins: Germany keeping hold of the ball now and hoping to use up some valuable time.
Replays show just what a cracking, swerving effort that was out of the blue from Sanches.
Imagine if that had gone in! Talk about a grandstand finish…
18:37 , George Flood
WOODWORK!
78 mins: An absolute thunderbolt from Sanches following a short Moutinho corner cannons back off the post.
What an effort and what a goal that would have been!
18:36 , George Flood
75 mins: Germany try to quickly release Goretzka, but the pass is overhit and gratefully scooped up by Rui Patricio.
At the other end, Portugal press on but Jota is felled by a mistimed sliding challenge from Ginter, who is deservedly cautioned by English referee Anthony Taylor.
18:32 , George Flood
72 mins: Two changes from Germany as they look to maintain this two-goal lead.
Bayern duo Leon Goretzka and Niklas Sule replace Havertz and Gundogan.
Goretzka will offer some fresh legs in midfield, while Sule is a tall centre-back who will help to tidy up any further crosses into that German box.
18:30 , George Flood
69 mins: Neuer was understandably furious with Germany’s defending for that Jota goal – how can you leave Ronaldo unmarked like that?!
It’s all just getting a tad frantic for the hosts, with Rudiger having to be alert and then demanding the same from his team-mates.
Surely they won’t throw this lead away… will they?!
GOAL! Portugal 2-4 Germany | Diogo Jota 67′ 18:27 , George Flood
67 mins: Maybe this thrilling game isn’t over yet!
Germany go to sleep at the back after Havertz is booked for a poor challenge on Ronaldo.
Ronaldo is then unmarked from the free-kick as he goes to the back post and keeps the ball alive with a hooked pass across goal that is tapped in on the line by Liverpool’s Jota.
The goal stands after another VAR check for offside.
18:25 , George Flood
63 mins: That goal was to prove the impressive Gosens’ final contribution as he is replaced by RB Leipzig’s Marcel Halstenberg.
Emre Can is also on for Mats Hummels and Portugal replace Fernandes with Joao Moutinho.
GOAL! Portugal 1-4 Germany | Robin Gosens 60′ 18:20 , George Flood
60 mins: Fantastic again from Germany, who it’s fair to say have their mojo back… and then some!
Portugal just have no answer here and again it’s great build-up, with Ginter providing the perfect back-post ball for fellow wing-back Gosens to head in from close range.
No less than the Atalanta star deserves. A tremendous performance capped off with a goal.
18:18 , George Flood
57 mins: Gundogan tries to pick out the latest marauding run down that left flank from Gosens, but he just puts too much power on it and the ball goes behind for a goal kick.
Another change from Santos, who sends on speedy Benfica attacker Rafa Silva in place of William Carvalho.
Portugal need a fresh spark here to turn the tide. How open is the ‘Group of Death’ by the way?!
Brilliant drama today in Budapest and Munich.
18:13 , George Flood
53 mins: Portugal turn to Ronaldo for a lifeline, but his ambitious free-kick attempt flies over the crossbar from around 25 yards.
GOAL! Portugal 1-3 Germany | Kai Havertz 51′ 18:10 , George Flood
51 mins: Havertz sidefoots in the impressive Gosens’ sliding cross from a few yards out after a fine passing move from Germany involving the likes of Gundogan and Muller.
It’s all going badly wrong for Portugal.
Gosens has been superb.
18:08 , George Flood
48 mins: Gnabry tries to prevent a Portugal corner, but his clearance is intercepted and Sanches is able to combine with Fernandes, whose enticing cross towards the back post is just too high for Jota.
Gosens looked to jar his knee during a challenge a few moments ago. One to keep an eye on.
18:05 , George Flood
Back underway at the Allianz Arena.
More of the same, please!
Renato Sanches on for second half 18:03 , George Flood
The players are back out for the second half and Portugal are making a change.
Renato Sanches is coming on for Bernardo Silva.
Surely an injury sustained by the Manchester City playmaker.
Euros record for own goals 18:02 , George Flood
Per Mark Pougatch on ITV, five own goals at Euro 2020 so far is already a European Championship record – and we’ve not even finished the second round of group stage fixtures yet!
17:59 , George Flood
A couple of cracking half-time Opta stats.
They have also tweeted that Portugal are the first European team ever to concede two own goals in one match at a major tournament.
Half-time 17:51 , George Flood
Portugal 1-2 Germany
And breathe! What a pulsating, action-packed first half in Munich.
This one is certainly living up to the pre-match billing – game of the tournament so far?
Portugal led completely against the run of play after Ronaldo finished off a sublime counter-attack, only to be behind at the interval after two quick-fire own goals from Dias and Guerreiro.
17:48 , George Flood
47 mins: Into three minutes of added time at the Allianz Arena and Fernandes’ free-kick from the right flank is headed away by Havertz and Gnabry lets it bounce for Neuer to collect.
17:46 , George Flood
43 mins: This is an incredibly open, end-to-end game as we head towards the interval.
Gosens’ shot is pushed away by Patricio and Carvalho crucially gets to the rebound before Kimmich.
Pepe then finds himself making inroads in the German penalty area and Rudiger makes a fine challenge to concede a corner that is headed away by Hummels.
GOAL! Portugal 1-2 Germany | Raphael Guerreiro OG 39′ 17:41 , George Flood
39 mins: From elation to an absolute nightmare for Portugal, who now trail after two own goals in a span of just four minutes.
Guerreiro – facing his own goal – shins in Kimmich’s pull back from the byline and the goal stands after a VAR check for offside.
What incredible drama in Munich!
GOAL! Germany 1-1 Portugal | Ruben Dias OG 35’ 17:38 , George Flood
35 mins: All square in Munich!
Gosens volleys Ginter’s cross hard into the six-yard box and Havertz looks to guide the ball beyond Patricio, who stood no chance.
However, replays show that Dias clearly got the final touch…
17:35 , George Flood
33 mins: Fernandes releases Silva, who gets goal-side of Rudiger and looks to beat the Chelsea centre-back.
However, good work from Hummels allows Rudiger to recover and Germany snuff out the danger.
17:34 , George Flood
29 mins: Germany are probing again until Gnabry fouls Dias and Portugal can regroup.
Play is then stopped after a painful clash between Havertz and Pepe, with the latter coming off worse as he receives treatment and is gingerly helped to his feet.
17:29 , George Flood
27 mins: Chelsea’s Champions League Final hero Havertz crudely barges over William Carvalho and Portugal have a free-kick in a dangerous area out on the left flank.
Bruno Fernandes and Guerreiro stand over the ball, with the latter swinging in an accurate delivery that is headed well over the crossbar by Jota.
17:28 , George Flood
25 mins: With the temperature in Munich still hovering at around 30 degrees, both sets of players are afforded a drinks break with 20 minutes left in the first half.
A chance for both managers to impart some pearls of wisdom after a lively start to this contest.
17:26 , George Flood
23 mins: Dias shanks a clearance over his own crossbar after a probing cross from Matthias Ginter.
He clears Kroos’ initial corner, but Germany keep the pressure on and the exciting Gnabry’s cross is inches away from surely being headed in by Hummels, who just can’t reach it with Pepe beaten.
As it is, there’s no one gambling at the back post and the chance is lost.
Gnabry the key man for Germany so far, giving Raphael Guerreiro a tough first half.
17:23 , George Flood
20 mins: Ronaldo’s significant influence is only growing now after a cheeky no-look flick to fool Germany and Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.
Portugal have the chance to double their lead as Dias heads across the six-yard box and away to safety.
GOAL! Portugal 1-0 Germany | Cristiano Ronaldo 16′ 17:15 , George Flood
16 mins: Talk about smash and grab!
It’s been all Germany in the opening stages in Munich, but they find themselves behind again despite dominating the play.
Portugal spring out after the corner and Bernardo Silva carries forward before lofting a brilliant ball to Diogo Jota, who takes it effortlessly on his chest, waits for goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to commit and then squares it to Ronaldo for a simple finish from close range.
A brilliant counter-attacking goal. Ronaldo now within two of Ali Daei’s all-time international goalscoring record…
17:15 , George Flood
13 mins: Thomas Muller is the latest German to have a shot blocked before he and Joshua Kimmich battle to win a corner on the near side.
However, it’s quickly cleared and Portugal break at speed…
17:13 , George Flood
10 mins: More incisive passing play from the Germans, with Ruben Dias having to get down to block a powerful low strike from Toni Kroos.
Low will be delighted with this start. All the attacking is being done by the hosts, with Portugal struggling to retain any sort of possession.
Ronaldo not a bad threat to boast on the counter-attack, though…
17:11 , George Flood
8 mins: This really has been a terrific start from Germany, who are playing at a great tempo and piling bodies forward at every opportunity to really unsettle Portugal.
Kai Havertz’s low shot is parried by Rui Patricio, but an alert Gnabry keeps the attack alive and stays on his feet when he might have gone down.
The Bayern forward’s square ball is intercepted and cleared by Danilo.
NO GOAL 17:08 , George Flood
5 mins: It really was a fine, acrobatic finish from Atalanta full-back Gosens, but the goal is ruled out for offside against Gnabry.
Still goalless, but an impressive start to proceedings from Germany, who look full of guile and energy.
17:06 , George Flood
5 mins: Germany have the ball in the back of the net as Robin Gosens produces a superb flying finish at the back post after Toni Kroos’ dangerous cross just evades Serge Gnabry.
He celebrates, but Portugal protest furiously as the VAR checks for both handball and a possible offside.
I don’t think this will stand…
17:04 , George Flood
3 mins: A quiet opening, with Germany seeing a lot of possession and stroking the ball around patiently as they probe for an early opening.
There has to be more attacking intent from Low’s side here.
Kick-off 17:01 , George Flood
We are underway!
A massive game in Group F.
Who will come out on top?
16:58 , George Flood
Two passionate anthem renditions, with both sets of fans bang up for this one in the early evening sunshine in Munich.
Despite it being 6pm, it’s still around 30 degrees in Bavaria.
A real big-game feel to this. Bring it on!
16:54 , George Flood
Here come the teams at a sunny Allianz Arena.
Portugal back in their familiar burgundy home shirts with green shorts tonight.
Germany in white shirts with black shorts.
It’s time for the national anthems…
16:49 , George Flood
10 minutes remaining until kick-off in Munich.
Germany-France wasn’t the cracker we were all expecting on Tuesday, so let’s hope this latest heavyweight showdown in Group F lives up to the billing this evening.
16:41 , George Flood
Germany could not hope to still finish second in Group F if they were to lose again tonight.
All hope would not necessarily be lost if that were the case, though, with this Euros’ expanded format meaning that the four best third-âplaced teams also go through to the last 16.
They would need to beat Hungary in that instance in Munich on Wednesday and hope for the best.
Group F as it stands 16:35 , George Flood
Here’s a look at how Group F stands after the events in Budapest, with France now surely through despite that disappointing result and Germany bottom of the pile…

It’s all over in Budapest by the way, where Antoine Griezmann’s second-half goal has spared French blushes after Attila Fiola had given Hungary a shock lead just before the interval.
Still, a wonderful result (1-1) for the Hungarians against most people’s tournament favourites in front of a raucous, full-capacity home crowd.
The Group of Death is very much wide open!

Plenty of surprised reaction across social media that Joachim Low has resisted the urge to make any attacking changes to his team this evening after lacking cutting edge against France.
Will he come to regret that decision?

Santos is also keen for Portugal to focus on their own game this evening rather than worry about the threats posed by a wounded Germany side desperate to get their own campaign up and running in front of a home crowd in Munich.
“For us, the next match is a great match and we will face it the same way we always do: we want to win, we believe we can win. This is a key game for us,” he said.
“Germany is a great team but so is Portugal and we’re going to display our best abilities on the pitch.
“Over the years, we have shown that we can play even when we don’t have the ball and create chances and score and win, and that’s what we’re going to try to do.”
Santos: Ronaldo cannot win on his own 15:42 , George Flood
Here’s more from Santos on having to focus on his whole squad, not just Ronaldo…
“I have to motivate every single player, not just Ronaldo for instance. Portugal’s value is based on our team,” he said.
“It’s great to have Ronaldo on our side, we’re very proud to have him but Cristiano alone cannot win a match.
“We will want everyone to be motivated: the starting 11 and those who are brought on.
“It’s important to be motivated but also focused. The will to win is very important, what comes from inside, from within from you soul, that’s what creates this amazing desire to win.
“We have to want to win but we have to know how to win because one without the other is useless.”
Santos insists ‘Portugal are not just Ronaldo’ 15:35 , George Flood
That “Portugal are not just Ronaldo” refrain is a common one uttered by international managers in pre-match press conferences when they are asked how they might look to shackle the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
It was even repeated by Portugal boss Fernando Santos in the build-up to tonight’s heavyweight tussle in Munich after Ronaldo turned things up a notch in the closing stages against Hungary.
“Portugal are a team, not just Cristiano Ronaldo,” Santos said.
“Portugal are proud of this team.
“I have to motivate them all, also those who are on the bench.”
Low: Portugal are more than just one-man Ronaldo show 15:23 , George Flood
Asked how to combat the ever-present threat of Ronaldo as the Juventus superstar chases more high-profile scoring records, Low insisted that Portugal have now evolved to boast far more dangers than just CR7, with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Diogo Jota also well capable of shouldering the attacking load.
Indeed, he even believes that the defending champions are better equipped than France to triumph again this summer.
“Portugal has remained structurally together since Euro 2016. They are strong in aerial combat in defence and, above all, on the offensive. Portugal is not a one-man show by Ronaldo. You have four or five world-class attacking players,” Low said.
“In terms of breadth, they are perhaps even better positioned than France. They are a team that also learns more about combinations at the highest level. Many of their players can hardly be separated from the ball.
“In 2012, 2014, 2016, the entire game of Portugal was focused on Ronaldo. This is no longer the case. There are significantly more outstanding offensive players. Of course, Ronaldo is a special player who can do more than just move coke bottles. He’s quick, he’s got a good header. We have to see how we can get it under control.”
Low optimistic over Germany fightback 15:18 , George Flood
Euro 2020 is of course the last gasp of Joachim Low’s 15-year stint in charge of the German national team before former Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick takes the reins after the tournament.
And the 61-year-old will be desperate not to end a successful reign that included 2014 World Cup glory in Brazil with a painful group stage exit.
“On Tuesday evening we were all disappointed because we lost bitterly to an unfortunate own goal,” Low said at his pre-match press conference.
“However, we reworked the game extensively, also with a view to what we have to and will do differently against Portugal. We had a good defensive performance against France, but didn’t create enough chances to score.
© Provided by Evening Standard (REUTERS)
“We are optimistic that things will go better against Portugal. We are approaching the game with focus and are confident that we will get a positive result.
“Tactically, we have to bring something new into the game, which means above all new offensive power. We have to react differently in some situations and occupy other spaces. The tactical changes have nothing to do with the system.
“Any player can implement any of these changes in any position. We were well organised defensively, so no major tactical changes are planned.”

Here’s a reminder of the star-studded squads available to Santos and Low at this tournament, starting with Portugal.

Ronaldo close to Ali Daei record 14:52 , George Flood
Pushing the Coca-Cola antics to one side, Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace against Hungary in Budapest saw him become the leading scorer in the history of the European Championship, overtaking Michel Platini.
In fact, with 106 goals (in 176 caps), he is now just three shy of matching Iran legend Ali Daei’s all-time goal record in international football.
Daei scored 109 in 149 games between 1993-2006.
Can Ronaldo get there at this tournament?

Germany’s main absentee as things stand is RB Leipzig right-back Lukas Klostermann, who could miss the rest of the tournament with a muscle injury.
Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Jonas Hofmann is also out today, though Serge Gnabry is fit to feature.
Low is unlikely to meddle with his three-man defence tonight, but will there be changes further forward after a toothless display against France?
The likes of Chelsea striker Timo Werner will be pushing to come in….
Germany predicted XI: Neuer; Ginter, Hummels, Rudiger; Kimmich, Gundogan, Kroos, Gosens; Havertz, Muller; Gnabry
Portugal team news 14:33 , George Flood
Both Fernando Santos and Joachim Low have almost fully-fit squads to choose from in Munich this evening.
Teenage left-back Nuno Mendes is the only doubt for Portugal due to a thigh issue that has led to him training alone in recent days.
The defending European champions seem unlikely to make changes to the side that left it very late to beat Hungary 3-0 in a rocking Budapest on Tuesday.
Portugal predicted XI: Rui Patricio; Nelson Semedo, Ruben Dias, Pepe, Guerreiro; Danilo, William Carvalho; Diogo Jota, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva; Ronaldo
Standard Sport prediction 14:28 , George Flood
Portugal 1-1 Germany
Both teams look well drilled in defence, though Portugal had the finishing touch that Germany lacked in the first round of fixtures.
This is genuinely a game which could go either way, so a tense draw could be in store with a defeat for either team potentially fatal to their hopes.
