Politics latest: Rayner gets new role in Labour reshuffle – as Nandy’s ‘brutal’ demotion conversation revealed

It’s been a busy few hours as Sir Keir Starmer reshuffled his shadow cabinet.
Here’s what happened…
Who is in?
Angela Rayner – appointed to shadow levelling up secretary. She remains deputy Labour leader – and has formally been given the title of shadow deputy prime minister.
Shabana Mahmood – becomes shadow justice secretary. The MP for Birmingham Ladywood replaces Steve Reed.
Steve Reed – he in turn replaces Jim McMahon as shadow environment secretary.
Pat McFadden – has taken on Angela Rayner’s former brief as shadow chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. He was previously shadow chief secretary to the Treasury.
Liz Kendall – has entered Sir Keir’s shadow cabinet as his work and pensions secretary, replacing Jonathan Ashworth.
Jonathan Ashworth – he has become shadow paymaster general.
Thangam Debbonaire – she has been appointed as shadow culture secretary.
Lucy Powell – takes over as shadow leader of the House of Commons.
Darren Jones – becomes shadow chief secretary to the Treasury.
Nick Thomas-Symonds – is now shadow minister without portfolio in the Cabinet Office.
Peter Kyle – takes over as shadow science, innovation and technology secretary.
Hilary Benn – has replaced Peter Kyle as shadow Northern Ireland secretary.
Ellie Reeves – is appointed to the shadow cabinet as deputy national campaign coordinator.
Who is out?
Jim McMahon – the shadow environment secretary was the first to confirm he would be stepping down from his role in Sir Keir’s shadow cabinet.
Lisa Nandy – the MP has been replaced as shadow levelling up secretary by Angela Rayner. She has been demoted to shadow international development minister but will still attend shadow cabinet.
Rosena Allin-Khan – stepped down as shadow cabinet minister for mental health.
Fleur Anderson – previous shadow paymaster general, no word yet of a new job.
