Politics latest: Group claims responsibility for Keir Starmer glitter protest – as MPs voice security fears

Glitter #Glitter

On tonight’s show: We still don’t really know what Labour will do if they win power

Sir Keir Starmer. leader of the Labour Party – pitching to be leader of the United Kingdom.

And what better time to make that pitch than party conference…

It got off to a dramatic start. A protester – making it onto the stage – glitter everywhere – and just look at how long it took security to react.

There will be recriminations for sure.

But – shirt sleeves rolled up and sparkles in his hair – Sir Keir cracked on… and he will get credit for that.

In the hall he was treated as a rockstar – even coming back onto the stage for a final encore.

But here’s my question.

If there was a criticism of Labour before the speech, it was this: we don’t really know what they would do if they were in power – other than the fact they wouldn’t be like the Tories.

And after the speech? Well I’m still not really clear. Other than a pledge to build 1.5 million houses – this was a speech that was light on policy.

We know what Sir Keir thinks the problem is – housing, an NHS on its knees, a cost of living crisis that means people pick up a treat at the supermarket just to put it back on the shelf. Those are the problems.

But honestly – I’m still not sure how he’ll fix them.

He says he wants growth – a reforming state – better public services with an iron grip on the public finances.

That’s the destination – but we still don’t know how he’s going to get there.

Maybe that doesn’t matter. It didn’t matter to the people in the hall. They think Sir Keir is going to win the next election anyway.

And they might be right.
