Mascouche police confirmed one person has died in a tornado that hit the suburb around 4 p.m. on Monday.
The force said all it could say so far is that the man may have taken shelter in his shed.
Environment Canada confirmed the tornado after seeing videos on social media of debris flying through the air, but could not say how strong it was, its trajectory or how far it travelled since the agency has not yet been on the ground.
A severe thunderstorm watch has been in effect for all of southern Quebec since early Monday morning.
“We had this first tornado in Mascouche between 4 and 4:30,” said Steve Boily, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. He said there may have been another tornado earlier south of Quebec City.
“We knew there was a possibility for tornadoes today. It was in the wording of the thunderstorm watch. … Once we had the confirmation of the tornado touching ground at Mascouche, what we saw on the radar, we issued the tornado warning for the area south of Quebec City.”
“We don’t have a lot of evidence on that one, but one of my colleagues saw a video with debris again, flying around, and a rotation at the base of the clouds, so probably that’s another tornado but we need to confirm that one.”
