‘Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’ trailer reveals Paldea region, Terastal forms and rideable legendaries

A new “Pokémon Scarlet and Violet” trailer released this morning introduces players to the Paldea region, rideable legendaries and the new Terastal form mechanic.

The trailer expands on the mystery behind two legendary Pokémon: Koraidon and Miraidon. They are shown as both partners for the player and rideable creatures on land, sea and air as they can be used as a bike and glider, respectively.

As with all Pokémon games, a new battling gimmick mechanic has been introduced to change things up from previous installments. The Paldea region is unique not only because it will have region exclusive forms like Paldean Wooper — already “memed” online as Pooper — but also because all Pokémon can turn into a special crystallized form by undergoing a process called “Terastallizing,” which can boost a Pokémon’s power in battle and may even change its type.

Players can activate Terastallizing once per battle with an item called a “Terra Orb.” According to the Pokémon website, the Terra Orb can be recharged at Pokémon centers or by touching crystals scattered across Paldea. Just as with “Pokémon Sword and Shield,” Pokémon with unique Terastal forms can be obtained through raid battles.

New Pokémon and characters are also introduced in the trailer, including a dog Pokémon seemingly made of dough aptly named Fidough and an ice-type whale-inspired Pokémon called Cetitan. Fidough adds to the roster of food-based Pokémon, the last one being the previously revealed Lechonk and Smoliv.

One standout character already going viral is Penny, a shy classmate of the player character with an Eevee bag. Other characters include Mr. Clavell, the director of the academy, homeroom and biology teacher Jacq, ice-type gym leader Grusha and the new player rival Nemona.

Gym battles are back, with eight gym leaders who can be battled in any order the player chooses. The trailer says the gym battles and journey to victory road are just one of three storylines in the games, but it does not hint at what the other two are. The player character will attend either the Naranja Academy or Uva Academy, depending on the version, and embark on a treasure hunt of some kind.

“Pokémon Scarlet and Violet” will be released on Nov. 18 for the Nintendo Switch.
