The Detroit Pistons continued their signing spree during the first day of free agency Friday, agreeing to a three-year, $60 million contract with 6-8 forward Jerami Grant, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Grant, 26, averaged 12 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting 39 percent from 3-point range in 71 games during his lone season with the Denver Nuggets in 2019-20. He averaged 11.6 points in 19 playoff games.
Grant is an athletic wing, a good defender whose offensive game has blossomed the past two seasons. He averaged career highs in points (13.6) and rebounds (5.2) in 77 games with Oklahoma City in 2018-19.
He reportedly was offered the same deal by the Nuggets, who reached the Western Conference finals before losing to the eventual NBA champion Lakers, but wanted to go somewhere where he would have a bigger role. He started only 24 games in Denver.
To make room for Grant under the salary cap, the Pistons reportedly will use the stretch provision to waive Dewayne Dedmon and Rodney McGruder, acquired in trades this week. They will be on Detroit’s cap for the next five seasons — $2.7 million each year for Dedmon and $1 million each year for McGruder.
Grant played his college ball at Syracuse and was selected in the second round of the 2014 draft by Philadelphia (39th overall). He spent two-plus seasons with the Sixers before being dealt to Oklahoma City. He has appeared in 454 games over six seasons, averaging 9.3 points and 3.9 rebounds while shooting 35 percent from beyond the arc.
Grant’s uncle, Horace, is familiar to Pistons fans. Horace Grant played 17 NBA seasons, including seven with Chicago during the peak of the Pistons-Bulls rivalry. Grant’s father, Harvey, played 11 NBA seasons. His brother, Jerian, played with the Washington Wizards last season.
