Piers Morgan tells women to “calm down” as they become “over emotional” at England game

Piers Morgan risked the wrath of females on Twitter today, as he laughed off their passionate response to England’s Lioness squad going head-to-head with Spain in the World Cup final.

The Talk TV host referenced Michael Winner’s famous Esure adverts where he would tell female drivers to “calm down dear” as he said, “it’s only a game of football”.

He typed: “Seems to be a lot of very over-emotional women on here right now. Calm down, it’s only a game of football…”

Immediately the presenter was flooded with comments from his 8.5 million followers.

One said: “Excuse me/us? Telling us to calm down? How rude of you. Men are emotional about football, and not told to calm down. You do not own our emotions!”

A second replied: “The level of skill in the women’s game is simply sublime. Best game of football I have ever had the privilege of watching.”

While a third responded: “Weird how there are some fragile men on here revelling in England losing.”

England heartbreakingly lost 1-0 to Spain in their first Women’s World Cup final as Olga Carmona’s first-half goal proved enough to break the Lionesses’ hearts.

In a follow up Tweet, Piers typed: “BREAKING: Our women can’t bring it home either.

“Good effort @Lionesses but the better team won. Congrats to Spain,” he added.

Sarina Wiegman and her players were looking to bring the game’s biggest prize home from Sydney but Carmona drilled a finish into the far corner on 29 minutes.

And, although Mary Earps brilliantly saved Jennifer Hermoso’s penalty with 20 minutes remaining, England couldn’t fashion an equaliser.

In a contrasting post to Piers, Prince William praised the Lionesses for their “spirit and drive” during the tournament, despite not attending today’s final.

He typed: “Although it’s the result none of us wanted, @Lionesses you have done yourselves and this nation proud.

“Your spirit and drive have inspired so many people and paved the way for generations to come.

“Thank you for the footballing memories. Congratulations to Spain,” he added.
